COMIC BOOK RELETTERING

The following titles were originally published in their native language before being later translated and for the English language market. As such, the lettering requirements differ slightly from ‘full letters’. New English letters and sound effects are created and formatted to replace the original text, but often balloons and caption boxes remain as originally published. However, due to difference arising in sentence length, sometimes redraws/art touch-ups (and often new balloons) are required to replace the originals.

MANGA LETTERING

There are generally two approaches to lettering translated manga: “remove, replace, and retouch” (which involves erasing all kanji/original sound effects from the original artwork, carefully adding new artwork to fill in the gaps, and adding new localised sound effects in their place) and “side by side” (where the sound effects are left as they originally appear, and new localised ones are placed alongside them).

While each style has its merits, both require attention to spacing, style, and dynamism, adding emphasis to the original artwork without distraction.
